20. Herbert Rainwater, commander-in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of America, arrives to attend the VFW regional meeting.

21. Thai Education Minister Sukich Nimanhaeminda arrives for a week's visit.

The 1971 Pacific regional meeting of Veterans of Foreign Wars is opened in .

During the three-day meeting, more than 140 veterans from the Pacific area discussed way and means of defending U.S. security and world peace, rehabilitation of disabled U.S. veterans and the relief of needy veterans.

28. President Hammer De Roburt of , an island country in the South Pacific, arrives for a five-day unofficial visit.

De Roburt is the first elected president of his country and con­currently serves as minister of de­velopment. He visited the Tai­wan Fertilizer Company, Central Trust of China and Vocational Advisory Committee for Retired Serviceman.

Dr. Maurice E. Votaw, professor emeritus of the of of the , arrives for a visit. The 71-year-old professor lived in for 27 years until 1949. He worked as adviser at the International Publicity Office in Chungking and .

Dr. Lin Yutang, novelist and essayist, returns from a four-month tour of .

29. Four West German Parliamen­tarians of the Christian Social Union headed by Dr. Richard Stuchlen leave after a nine-day visit. Dr. Stuchlen stressed Sino-German friendship despite the absence of diplomatic relations. "Diplomatic ties are not the prerequisite of friendship," he said.

A five-member Chinese delegation headed by Walter H. Fei, vice chair­man of the Council for International Development and Cooperation, leaves for to attend a conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization June 1 to 8.
